The line graph gives information about the needs of four different kinds of textiles (polyester, cotton, cellulosic, and wool) over the 1980–2015 period. Units are measured in million tons.

Overall, polyester, cotton, and cellulosic witnessed an increase in their demand while wool saw an opposite trend. In addition, the demand for polyester was much higher than the remaining textiles.

In regard to cotton, starting at roughly 14 in 1980, it reached the highest position in the period of 15 years until 1995 before being overtaken by polyester in the next years. This figure then showed a fluctuation from 1995 to 2015 and peaked at over 30 in the final year. A lower figure of about 5 was recorded by the demand for polyester at the beginning of the period. In the following years, its demand saw a sharp increase and reached a peak of approximately 70 in 2015.

In terms of cellulosic, its needs started at about 4 in 1980 and then slightly decreased in the following years before rising gradually to 10 in the last year. Wool, on the other hand, dropped to nearly 0 in 2015 after seeing a slight increase from roughly 1 in 1980 to about 5 in 1999.
