Some people believe that reading stories from a book is better than watching TV or playing computer games for children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, a growing challenge for parents has been to find the best way to help their children relax and educate them. Although I admit that there are several advantages of watching TV or playing computer games, I believe that reading stories from a book is a better way for children.

Generally, watching TV or playing games have some benefits, however, there are several reasons why viewing TV or playing computer games may have negative impacts on children. First, since the contents of games or television can sometimes be overly addictive, many youngsters become addicted to them. In fact, many children spend an inordinate amount of time playing computer games or lying on a couch in front of the television, which deters them from engaging in other activities in real life such as self-study or outdoor sports. As a result, their academic performance and health are negatively affected. Moreover, some of the computer games and television programs also exert adverse effects on children’s behavior. This means that some children, especially young children are likely to imitate aggressive and violent acts shown on TV or games.

By contrast, reading could be a better way compared to watching TV or playing computer games as it could bring a lot of tremendous benefits to children. Reading stories can pique children's imagination in ways that visual media cannot because they must visualize the story they read in their minds. When I was young, for example, I remembered devouring the Harry Potter series and drew up in my mind a whole magical world. I would not have been able to do that if I had watched the movies instead of reading the books first. In addition, when children read a book, all of their attention is focused on the story- the rest of the world just falls away, and they can immerse themselves in every fine detail they are absorbing. Reading is therefore an ideal way of helping children to improve their focus and concentration.

In conclusion, I completely agree that it would be much more preferable for children to read stories from a book as opposed to watching television or playing computer games because watching TV or playing computer games could influence negatively children in some cases while reading books is obviously beneficial to them.
