In many countries, the government is spending a large amount of money on improving internet access. Why it is happening and do you think it is the most appropriate use of government money?

In many parts of the world, a huge amount of money is allocated by states to make improvement on internet penetration. Despite the advantages of internet connection, I would argue that it is not the best spending of the government budget.

On the one hand, it is no doubt that people stand to greatly benefits from internet access to the web. First, the internet put various sources of information at the user’s fingertips so that improved internet can mean heightened public intellect. The populace avails themselves online news and courses to educate themselves about their areas of interest and become knowledgeable. Second, an extended internet connection facilitates the government’s process of notifying the general public of their campaigns. Based on the internet connection, individuals get access to information about vaccination programs available on the health department’s website.

On the other hand, the government ‘s spending on other activities related to education or healthcare should be prioritized over upgrading internet access. Many schools are underresourced and therefore heavy investment in a telecommunications network is unjustified. Without proper schooling provided by the education system, people are easily misled by misinformation on the web. Furthermore, the existing healthcare systems are overloaded and ever-increasingly those who are in dire need of treating their ailments. The budget should be redirected from upgrading internet connectivity to boosting medical facilities in order to meet the growing demand which is more urgent.

In conclusion, although the merits of connecting internet were seen to some extent, it seems to me that it is not reasonable to pump money into internet-based connection.
