Topic: New technologies have changed the way children spend their free time. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
It is true that many children now spend much of their spare time playing with latest devices. In my view, the drawbacks of this trend are more significant than the benefits.
On the one hand, the appearance of new devices has bought a certain value to children. Firstly, up-to-date technologies encourage children to use their free time to broaden their knowledge, which is possible in fun ways through interactive software. My young cousin, for example, spends hours on the Internet learning about wild animals. Secondly, the Internet gives youngsters opportunities to find out like-minded-people in any part of the world, using chat rooms and social networks such as Facebook. Therefore, not only new technologies promote a habit of self-study but also develop a wide circle of virtual friends.
Despite those said advantages, I still believe that the downside of the emergence of modern technological devices in children’s leisure time is more worrying. The first reason for this view is that children might develop a passive life style and possibly isolate them from society. This is because this way of entertainment is extremely addictive. Consequently, children are likely to spend hours in their rooms playing electronic games or using the Internet without any communication with the outside world. The second reason is that exposure to technology could lead to deterioration in heath. If children keep their eye glued to screens for hours on end, they may suffer from eye-strain. Waves from hi-fi devices tend to cause headaches if used for too long.
In conclusion, I would argue that the disadvantages of this modern trend are more significant than the advantages.
