In the modern world, it is possible to shop, work and communicate with people via the internet and live without making any face-to-face contact with others. Is it a positive or negative development in your opinion?

These days, it is a fact that people are able to engage in online purchasing, work and information exchange with internet-connected devices rather than directly communicate. I strongly believe that the drawbacks outweigh the merits.

The domination of online communication can be attributed to two primary reasons. First, with the development of technology, people who use internet-enabled devices to get access to online shopping stores and enjoy the convenience of having almost everything at the click of a button or touch on the screen. This spares them from unnecessary daily travel so that they can channel their time on working to earn a living.

Second, online communication is time-saving which is an essential factor in the hectic pace of life. Telecommunication tools including email, messaging, social networks give rise to distance working at home that keep them safe from the harsh weather like torrential rain or the scorching heat of summer when commuting to work. On the other hand, excessive internet use is detrimental to both physical and mental health. Now that people have their eyes glued to the screens and spend less time on physical activities. Chances are, they might develop a sedentary lifestyle and become vulnerable to problems such as heart disease and diabetes. Moreover, the lure of purchasing online distracts people’s interest in traditional shopping, which lowers the chance of engaging in social gatherings. Having a real conversation with friends or sharing a joke with them while going to the mall together is no longer a common sight. What might follow is that people might lose the sense of belonging to a society and that will make them feel isolated and depressed.

In conclusion, while internet contact has some obvious merits, these are eclipsed by the negative impact on users' health.
