Many museums charge for admission while others are free. Do you think the advantages of charging people for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages?

In many places, people have to buy tickets to enter museums, whereas others welcome visitors by the free entrance. Both of these ways have their own benefits, and I believe the advantages of charging for admission greatly outweigh the benefits that free entrance provides.

On the one hand, free access benefits the public in general. People instinctually prefer something free to a costly one. Thus, free of charge encourages people to go to museums; gives the opportunity for all walks of life to visit museums. Especially with newly-opened museums, free access can attract a large number of visitors. However, free charge has downsides, for example, museums might get overcrowded, hence it decreases the value of exhibitions.

On the other side, taking admission charge is highly beneficial for museums. With non-government museums, the entrance fee is one of the main income sources to maintain operations and pay salaries for employees. About museums are funded by governments, money collected from entrance tickets can contribute to museums revenues, it can be used as restoration cost to preserve museums’ exhibitions and items under good condition; refurbish the outside campus such as planting more flowers, placing more resting areas. When the museum can keep its pieces in great status, it might attract more visitors since no one wants to visit a degraded museum. In other words, fee charges allow museums to generate extra income to increase the quality of the experience for visitors.

In conclusion, as understanding the advantages of charge admission, I would argue that both museums and visitors directly or indirectly benefit from entrance fees. Thus, it outweighs the benefits of free entrance.
