The world is experiencing many pressing problems caused by population explosion. Two of the most burning issues associated with overpopulation are water scarcity and unemployment. These two problems require both governments and individuals to take action to protect humans from being at risk.
Water scarcity is considered one of the inevitable consequences caused by overpopulation - the thorny issue that human beings are facing nowadays. With the expansion of 80 million people, each year that results in the demand for fresh water is also on the increase - approximately 64 billion m3 increasing each year. The 2009 World Water Development predicted that by the end of 2030, nearly 50% of the global population will be suffered from water deficiency. This problem negatively correlates with the living conditions of inhabitants. Thus, it becomes necessary to find solutions to tackle this dilemma. Desalination that is the process of removing salts from seawater to create drinking water is one of the top effective solutions to cope with water-stress. This method has solved the freshwater shortage in many countries, typically in the Middle East: desalination accounted for 50% of drinking water in Saudi Arabia, Israel obtains 40% of freshwater from desalination. Hence, the government should build more desalination plants to take the best advantages of this solution. Besides the government’s responsibility, the individual’s actions are of paramount importance as well. Inhabitants should get involved to preserve and restore water of wetland as a natural solution to the global water issue. Wetland plays a critical role in serving water for humans. For example, in India, wetland covers just nearly 5% of the country’s land surface but meets about one-third of domestic water supply (ScienceDirect, 2014, p.03). Therefore, protecting wetlands is a workable solution that people can accomplish immediately to deal with this water crisis.
Another great concern to governments and citizens of overcrowding is highly unemployed. Indeed, a limited number of vacancies cannot meet the rapidly increasing population, which becomes an alarming issue. International Labour Organization (1996) reported that at the beginning of the decade 1990s, one-third of the world’s urban population, approximately 400 million people, were suffering poverty on account of the lack of full employment. Such is a serious issue that the government and individual should take steps immediately to address it. In many countries, governments pay attention to vocational qualifications to enhance labors’ employability. Specifically, China’s government has set up a vocational qualification training system of five levels (IBP, 2013). This system greatly contributes to economic and social development by building human capital. Ministry of Education in China announced that about 90% of the graduates finding jobs within six months after their graduation in recent years and over 70% of those enter the workforce in modern manufacturing and emerging industries (Statistical report on China’s vocational education in 2018, 2019). Moreover, dwellers are encouraged to do a start-up to provide employment opportunities for themselves and other young people. Take Jack Ma - one of the most successful entrepreneurs in China as an illustration. He is the founder of Alibaba Group - China’s biggest e-commerce company. Alibaba Group will have offered nearly 102 thousand full-time jobs for employees by the end of March 2019. (Agne Blazyte, 2019).
To sum up, overpopulation in urban areas has extremely adverse influences on the individuals and the whole society. Most of the problems, however, can be minimized if governments and society share collective responsibilities. Henceforth, it is not only the government’s responsibility but also of all residents to cope with the consequences of overcrowding.
