Many criminals re-offended after they have been punished. Why do some people continue to commit crimes after they have been punished and what measures can be taken to tackle this problem.

It has been observed that a lot of convicted people reoffend after being incarcerated. I believe that this is because of the lack of job prospects outside prison and this can be addressed by enhancing their skills through trainings that would make them employable in the future.

First, many ex-convicts could not secure proper jobs since they do not have the right skill set to be hire-able. In other words, a lot of people commit crimes once released from jail because they do not have any legal source of income which makes them desperate; hence, they will commit illegal activities to provide for themselves and their families. The Daily Mail, for instance, reported that a man rob a bank for the reason that he had not been employed ever since he was released from prison 6 months ago. This is not an isolated incident and a lot of reoffenders have the same story.

Tackling this issue involves educating these convicts. This needs to happen via workshops and trainings. One of the provincial jails in Myanmar, for instance, launched one such initiative where the authorities hired professionals to teach the prisoners how to sew clothes resulting in them landing a job in garment factories after jail. Very few of them commit crimes thereafter. Given the profound impact of this project on them, it would be worth expanding it on a larger scale.

To conclude, many people would involve themselves in criminal activities after being in prison owing to the fact that they are unemployed. Fortunately, ensuring that these jailed individuals acquire skills that will land them jobs outside prison could prevent this problem from recurring.
