There nowadays exists cases where people work for more than one firm simultaneously. While this trend can be ascribable to people's craving for employment security, being employed by two companies at the same time may exert an injurious impact on individuals' well-being and the company's productivity.

There would be one reason for people's having at least two jobs at the same time, which is people's need to be employed. Due to the inextricability of progress in the field of technology, machines and robots seem to be more and more sophisticated and efficient, thus gradually superseding human labour. As a result, the likelihood of maintaining a job permanently at a company appears to be little. This would mean that were people working for two companies simultaneously to be made redundant by one, they would not have to join the ranks of the unemployed as they still hold another post at the other company.

Although having two simultaneous jobs would increase one's employment security, it would not be a positive development overall. First, working for more than one firm concurrently may adversely impact individuals' health. In terms of their physical health, juggling two jobs at the same time can indubitably make people scrawny should they overwork. Concerning their mental health, such workers can suffer from stress due to more scrutiny from employers and scurrilous rumours of colleagues. In a hyper-competitive job market, as it is, companies may have to introduce products of the best quality to consumers to gain a foothold. Likewise, employees may also want to advance their careers, hence defaming their colleagues to fulfill their ambition would be inevitable. Second, maintaining two jobs may also reduce the company's productivity. It may be because employees cannot focus exclusively on what they are doing at one firm; instead, they spare a thought for the workload at the other.

In conclusion, people's craving for being employed would be the root cause of their tendency to maintain at least two jobs. However, this development may be unwelcome as it can deteriorate people's health and reduce the company's productivity.
