Some people think that exams are a good way of assessing a student’s level. Other people believe that they put unnecessary pressure on young learners and tell us very little about their actual ability. Discuss both views and give your own opinion in 250-300 words.

Educational institutions and universities across the world conduct exams to assess learners’ understanding of the concepts taught. While some people believe that exams are effective in doing this, some others argue that they put the young learners under undue pressure.

The proponents of exams contend that exams require the learners to answer the questions of varying length and difficult level. Generally, the questions asked in the exams may range from simply defining a concept to applying a theory to solve a problem in real life. Reading the answers, the examiner is able to gauge the learners’ understanding of the concepts taught. For example, an answer requiring the illustration and explanation of the process of manufacturing cement, will tell the examiner the extent to which the learner has understood the process. Similarly, the answer to a question on the factors affecting climate change, will reveal the learner’s general knowledge and thinking ability.

On the other hand, the opponents of exams argue that instead of developing interest in learning and motivating them to achieve more, exams put the young learners under unnecessary pressure. They assert that exams do not allow flexibility in time. As everyone is required to finish the exam within the stipulated time, those whose pace of writing is much slower than the normal feel unduly stressed out. Further, rather than encouraging original thinking exams promote rote learning. As exams attach considerable importance to marks and grades, learners merely memorize the answers with the aim to score high grades. So, the contention that exams bring out the best in the learners is wrong.

In conclusion, though exams are considered to be effective way of assessing the learner’s knowledge by some people, the effectiveness is questionable if they do not promote independent thinking and creative thinking abilities.
