Topic: Compare the influence of parents and peers on teenagers

Adolescence is the period of transition from childhood to adulthood, the most sensitive time in a person’s life with a variety of considerable physical and mental changes. Therefore, teenagers’ development process is easily affected by parental factors along with social factors especially on academic performance and the choice of occupation.

Regarding parental influences, they are associated with the youth’s studying and the selection of occupation. Parents have direct impacts on the academic achievements of their children. If parents are supportive listeners and are interested in their adolescent’s schooling, it will encourage teenagers to have a positive attitude towards school. A survey which has been conducted at the Brookings High School claimed that children who get parent’s assistance in their studying like homework have higher grades and better performances at school. The result of this survey also indicated that parent’s participation helped make teenagers do not feel isolated in their schooling then reduce stressful life which creates an energetic and motivated student. Furthermore, as Penick and Jepsen (March 1992) (cited in Lankard, B. A. 1995) stated, parent’s socioeconomic status is a momentous factor considerably impacting teenagers’ career decisions. Parents are real models for teens to consult about their future vocation. Seeing parents succeed in their career path, adolescents are prone to follow their parent’s footsteps. For instance, a father is a standout doctor outside together with a good breadwinner at home, his children might want to be a doctor. In a reverse situation, if teens grow up in loneliness as parents always work or in poor financial backgrounds, they tend to choose the completely opposite career path to their parents. Take everything into consideration, parents play a pivotal role in developing teenager's perspective which leads to their action afterward.

There is no doubt that friendship also greatly contributes to teens’ studying results and occupational choice. The academic achievement of youth has also been influenced appreciably by peers. According to a study in Williams collage of Gordon C. Winston z(2003), students in two of the three schools surveyed, in the middle of the SAT distribution having low grades if they live in a shared room with a student being in the bottom 15 percent of the SAT distribution. This research ultimately infers that better students do have a significant impact on their peers and help improve the friends’ overall scholastic performance. Moreover, peers have considerable impetus toward career decisions. Jeofray’s study (2017) revealed that peer’s advice on career guidance was helpful in their choices of careers. They tend to accept career advice from trusty peers than any other source. To be more specific, juveniles spend a large of time with friends at school, it is the reason why they consider friends as great listeners who can share the latest career information as well as their predecessors’ experience. For example, teenagers discuss trending jobs in the labor market, find out employment opportunities and earning tendencies in the future. Adolescents take these sharing into consideration and then select a job - the most potential and appropriate for them.

In conclusion, both family and friendships have undeniable and lasting influences on teenager’s career choices likewise academic performances. Parents, perhaps, impact on adolescents’ choices of career stronger than friends, whereas peers also motivate young’s study. Surely, either parents or friends are the best factors deciding teens’ successes in the future.
