Can one teach oneself a foreign language
In a world where nations and peoples are ever more dependent upon on another understanding other languages is paramount. Some people believe that they can learn foreign language on their own and others prefer to study with the support of teachers.
I am convinced that the presence of a teacher is important for an effective language learning. As a rule, teachers have the ability to inspire students and motivate them. There are plenty of different teaching methods like using flashcards which help students to memorize or review learning materials. Researches show that adults with significant exposure to a language in childhood are much better at language learning. It is a cumulative process so at least putting in an hour’s practice with a teach-yourself series will help to make a progress.
As Louis L'Amour said “Actually, all education is self-education. A teacher is only a guide, to point out the way, and no school, no matter how excellent, can give you education.” But self-education requires high discipline and self-control and it is hard to notice what is happening in a language without a knowledgeable tutor.
