This is about the theme the stress of war in A Separate Peace: The Stress of War A Separate Peace, by John Knowles takes place during World War II, in the year 1942. It is located at Devon, a prep school in New Hampshire. Finny and Gene, the two main characters, experience the pressure of war together. The stress of war is a theme in the novel that is portrayed in many ways. By the end of the novel, the stress of war became the prevailing theme. As you can see, the war was a controller of the world and its people. "For this was the Summer Session, just established to keep up with the pace of the war." (15) The summer session was put in place so that the 17- year- olds would be able to continue to train for the war. The young men had to grow up faster than they most likely wished. The demand for soldiers was high, so a pace had to be kept. "Anyway, they were more indulgent toward us than at any other time; they snapped at the heels of the seniors, driving and molding and arming them for the war." (24) The summer session was put into place so that the war would continue to move at a fast pace. It seemed as though everyone was focused on the war. "Trains were always late and crowded with "servicemen." (41) No matter where you looked, the war was around. It was controlling the way of life in 1942. The summer session helped to keep up with the war. Consequently, the stress of war did not really change America for the better, "To waste anything in America is immoral." (41) Everything had to be saved, no matter how unimportant or invaluable it was. Nothing was able to go to waste. "The prevailing color of life in America is a dull, dark green called olive drab. That color is always respectable and always important. Most other colors risk being unpatriotic." (41- 42) America had turned into a dull place. There were uneasy feelings everywhere you turned. "Stranded in this mill town railroad yard while the whole world was converging elsewhere, we seemed to be nothing but children playing among heroic men" (97) The servicemen were looked up to even during this time period. They were able to put a smile on the faces of our unhappy nation. 1942 was a very difficult year to be in America. After fighting in a war, a person is changed forever. " It was not the essence of Devon, and so it was donated, without too serious a wrench, to the war." (196) Devon was the birthplace of many servicemen. The seniors of Devon were all training for the war. "Your war memories will be with you forever, you'll be asked about them thousands of times after the war is over. People will get their respect for you from that-partly from that, don't get me wrong-but if you can say that you were up front where there was some real shooting going on, then that will mean a whole lot to you in years to come" (199) The war changes a person forever, and they will never be the same. After a war, a person is highly respected if they have fought in a war. "It seemed clear that wars were not made by generations and their special stupidities, but that wars were made instead by something ignorant in the human heart" (201) Wars are very brutal, and the stress back home can also be brutal. Everyone wears the stress of war. The memories made in 1942 will be with those forever. Without a doubt, 1942 and the years after were very difficult. World War II was a difficult war, and the stress of it multiplied at places like Devon. However, Gene was able to survive the war, and live on after. The stress of war continued many years after, but in some minds, it never ended.
