MARINERS’ COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITERS PARTICIPATE IN RAYTERISTA 3

Two MC – Staff writers namely Romerson Gadil and Christian Mamansag actively joined in Rayterista 3 – a 3 - day Regional Press convention hosted by the Bicol Universitarian in partnership with BU- University Student Council and BU- Office of Students Services held last January 21-23,2011 at Puerto Vista, Sto. Domingo, Albay.

With the theme – “The Role of Campus Press in Achieving the 8 Millennium Development Goals “the Bicol Universitarian, implemented the said Regional Press Convention aiming the development of the skills of these aspiring student journalists from different Colleges, enhancing their journalistic skills and blazing their passion, continuing their work as the prime movers of truthful and credible facts that their fellow students needs to know. They also gave emphasis on the change that these young student journalists can initiate through their words.

Through different talks, lectures and workshops given by different National and Local practitioners, these student journalists evolved themselves into better journalists, being a person of great influence, a purveyor of natural wisdom , a molder of unbiased and shaper of a better society.

These two MC – Staffers, acquired a lot of things, honed their abilities, and treasured this learning experience facing the fact that they are the only visiting school participated in this convention than the Colleges of Bicol University.

The intensive speeches given by the speakers made them realize what role they will play in the massive implementation of the MDG’s. They also gained a lot of things especially those vital information and characteristics that they should possess as the Campus Journalists. They also acquired some tips in improving the quality of their school papers and organizational management eyeing its development.

The invited speakers also tackled the problems that are prevalent affecting each organization, cited the best solutions and also discussed the big role that campus journalists plays in molding a brighter future and letting them realize the power that they have through their words being one of the strongest tandem of United Nations in initiating the implementation of MDG’s.

One of the highlights of this activity was the competition of different publications battling for different awards like Best Campus Paper, Best News Article, Best Editorial, Best Editorial Cartooning and many more. It served as a motivation in each publication for them to strive higher and work harder for the development of each publication.

“You, as a Campus Journalist, must serve as the Guardian of truth and democracy in the society. Believe in yourself and use the power in your hands in advocating for the truth.” one speaker said in his appealing message.

The participants bagged – up a lot of ideas regarding journalism, its ethics and its real essence.
