Generally, there is the opinion that travel is enjoyable because it is accompanied by leisure: swimming at sea, shopping and playing tennis. Where I live in Japan, many Japanese go on a journey abroad a year. However, if I had to answer the question, I would say that we can understand history and culture of a new place, visitting museum.
My primary reason is that going to museum is accompanied by knoledge of what kind history a place has ever seen. One example of this is that I have ever been to Victoria, Blitish Columbia, Canada when I was about 20 years old. Visitting museum, I understand that the name of Victoria comes from the name of queen in England in 19 century for the colonization by England, when I read sentences on a board displayed there. It made me feel interesting and consider why Canada was colonized at that time; that is to say, to know history quickens the interest on a place I visit. Also, history defines identity people living there-what kind of race, ethnic or religion people belong to. Considering why people in Canada speak English and have blond-colored hair, I could get the answer that they transfered from Europe in the old days if I could know the history of Canada. Thus, I must have interest in place.
Another reason is that I can understand culture of a place-what kind lives they people there lead. For instance, in Japan, there is an island named Hokkaido in the north district of the country. I visitted a museum when I went to the island several years ago. The museum, if anything, have a one-of-a-kind characteristic, because in the museum, various kinds of glasses, which is beautiful brightening for reflection of light, are displayed. I knew that Hokkado island is the one of the sight for glass glasswork. However, actually, seeing and touching works and read illustration on how different glasswork of Hokkaido is from others, I was convinced that glasswork reflect people there and its place, or culture. That made me have interest on the culture of the place. However, only conventional idea that Hokkaido is known for glasswork will remain in my head unless I had not visit the nuseum. Museum offers me a good chance to experience culture.
Therefore, I think that museum is the place that people should visit in going to new place. As I see it, it offers us the knowlede of history that is important in understanding why people is there. Also, visitting museum, we understand the important culture how people live.
