Please check if I have used Past Tense correctly

I'm trying to write this sentence in the dialogue in past tense. Have I written the underlined part correctly?

Sheldon had to borrow a book from a classmate he didn't like.

Later he told Harry, "I understand that borrowing the book helped me, but I resent having needed it at that time."

This is the way most native speakers would say it:

Later he told Harry, "I understand that borrowing the book helped me, but I resent that I needed it then. at that time."
