I stood under the Neem tree, looking at the state of the school campus after lunch break. Not a student was to be seen outside the classroom, but the ground showed signs of a (give me a word)____ crowd having been present there earlier; ice-cream sticks, wrappers, foils, bits of paper, and plastic were strewn all over. It grieved me to think how least bothered the people are! A voice inside me said, "Something should me done about it". But I didn't know what, how or who would do it. I headed the Nature Club of the school as its President, and knew very well that I should be the one to take initiative. I should do something to make my school campus cleaner, and instill environmental consciousness among students. But pangs of doubt stirred inside me. How can I alone make a difference? How can I motivate 100s of students to make use of the dust-bin? Will my efforts pay any result? But deep inside me a more feeble and determined voice said, "Yes, you can do it." As I tried to amplify this inner voice, the urge within me began to subside and I occupied my mind with other things at hand. Next day my cognizance towards the environment once again came to the surface. It was recess hour and I saw one of the girls licking the last bit of her ice-cream and carelessly throwing the stick on the ground. Without mulling over anything, and following my first instincts, I went up to where she was standing, picked up the stick, and threw it in the bin. She looked at me apologetically. "Come, let's clean the campus", I said. She was more than willing to help me in order to overcome her guiltiness. We went around, picking up paper, polythene and other littered items. It gave me immense satisfaction to see that I managed to influence someone through my action. Soon, I was joined by my friends and we started enjoying this activity. At the end of the day, we didn't make much of a difference, but surely, I had managed to gain support of six people. The next day I got more of my friends involved and we resumed our task with greater enthusiasm. After continuing this for several days in a row, changes started becoming visible. Many students became conscious and started using the bin. I then decided to have a full-fledged Campus Cleaning Drive as part of the Nature Club. My efforts were appraised by the teachers and they supported me to make it a success. Today, when I look at my clean and green high school campus, I feel proud of the fact that I decided to make a difference. I have also come to realize that every great journey begins with a single step, and we shouldn't be hesitant or reluctant to take that initial step.
