I spent (lost) a lot of time trying to understand whether to use a singular or plural verb, I eventually found out that both are used. I still don't know what's more common though. You can say either "The biggest influence in my life are my parents" or "The biggest influence in my life is my parents". I prefer to use the plural because it's what sounds good in Italian.
