Excuse me if I type wrong I am not an englishman.
here in my grammar book is written if we are speaking
about a possibly which is like a dream( not real .a possibility in past) we use were instead of was.
can I trust this.any thing else which was not mentioned?

For the verb "be", yes.
Use "were" in the "if" clause.

If my mother were here, I would kiss her. (My mother is not here.)
If I were a king, I would not work at McDonalds. (I am not a king.)

For other verbs (not "be"), use the simple past.
