Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

People have different views about how traffic offenders should be punished. While there are some good arguments in favor of punishing people by harsh punishments, I believe that there is better to use more efficient methods to reduce accidents.

On one hand, punishments, in essence, cannot be regarded as the positve way to deter criminal. There are various kind of punishments, such as fines, or license suspension. Strict punishment is a double-edge sword. It is the point to decrease amount of traffic accidents. By constract, it can result in negative effects. Therefore, the offenders will be reluctant to obey the law. In addition, many driving offences are from juvenile criminals who should be treated differently to adult ones. I do not think it is right to imprison very young offenders.

On the other hand, more useful techniques should be applied to improve road safety. First, it is necessary to educate people how to drive properly. It should be more strictly for people to get the driving licence. Second, there should be more attention on road. To cite an example, more warning signs should be put on the high rate of accidents streets, or speed cams can help to deter people from speeding. Final, goverments or local councils should invest in comprehensive transport system, such as public transportation, which means there are fewer people have to travel by their own cars.

To sum up, the importance of strict punishments is undeniable. However, it is extremely necessary to prevent the crime than punish them.
