Hi,I have a few quiries here:1. Beware of self-safety and do not use hand to remove remainders of fiber while the machine is still running. (correct?)OR  Beware of own self-safety ......(Correct?)2. Report the case to the supervisor immediately if any fault is found on the machine. OR Report the case to supervisor OR Report case to the supervisor. (Which one is correct?)3. Are "remainders of fiber, remains of fiber, fiber wastage, fiber waste" mean the same to leftover of the fiber? - Fiber here refer to the raw material used for     producing polyester. Thanks.

If you say beware of self safety you are saying the opposite of what you mean - you are saying safety is something you need to avoid. You mean 'Be aware'. This has a different meaning to beware.

Be aware of safety (or your own safety) and do not use your hand to remove fibres from the machine while it is in operation (or while it is running).

OR Report the case to supervisor OR Report case to the supervisor. (Which one is correct?)

Yours is faulty. - the machine isn't ALWAYS faulty.

Report to the supervisor if the machine is starting to kick up, play up, go phut, or work abnormally. The highlighted words are all very informal/slang and not appropriate for an official sign.

Self-safety sounded a little odd to me, although it may get the meaning across.

I happen to deal with industrial safety and related matters at work. Self-safety as you referred to in this context, is called “personal safety” which is also under the guideline of industrial safety. “Beware” could be translated to “be cautioned”

If this is a safety guideline on the factory floor, I would write it like this:

1) Observe personal safety. Be cautioned. Never attempt to remove fiber remnant from any moving parts of the machine with your hand while it is in operation.

2) Report any violation or incident to supervisor on duty immediately.

3) Remnant / byproduct / process waste are probably workable words depending on how it’s used.

Many thanks to all your replies. This is a training manual for my company which the employee will be tested on their knowledge of their responsibilities. I'm doing the translation part. Chinese to English. Pretty tough for me nowadays as I used to rely so much on translator until recently I found out on English forum that translator isn't always giving me the correct answers. Guess I have to come on to the forum more often now :-P

How interesting that you’ve made this observation! Being an expatriate of HK, I know exactly what you mean.

The problem with most English written material in HK is, in my opinion, that most writers do their the content composing in Chinese which then is translated into English when he is writing. As a result, the tone and the effect of his written material is either unclear or awkward. I need to clarify, I am not ******* them but as I pointed out many times elsewhere before, using this process to compose an essay or a letter always ended up sounding stiff and confusing. Relying on translation devises or dictionary also produces similar results because the meanings given from these sources tend to be generic which often times is not what the author meant in context. I completely understand writing and speaking proper English as a non-native are the most difficult obstacles to overcome and to master for I had gone through the same dilemma before. Writing specification, instructions and manual is part of my job now. If you wanted help I am available.
