please advice me any alternatives or correct me.

We took with us a mat and some food stuff for picnic. Can I use carried in place of took. (Any other alternative) . Thanks in advance.

These are both correct English. As you might expect, "carried" has a stronger sense of physically holding and transporting something; "took" is slightly more abstract.
