Hi everybody, I was wondering if any of you could help me correct the following sentence:

"-Still, I was a poor man before I got lucky and managed to find a job that allowed me to improve my living conditions"

It's fine, but better with the past perfect. The past perfect shows that your state of penury is in the past.
I would delete "still."
