My first reaction to this story was a feeling of confusion. From the beginning, I learnt that there was a nationwide intelligence test set for all children at the age of twelve. Dickie's parents seemed to be very upset by this test, '…the moistness of his mother's eyes, the scowl on his father's face, spoiled the mood of…'. I assumed this test was for getting into the top class in the school. However, to my surprise, Dickie's parents did not want him to study, instead, he was told off to 'read the comics' in the corner which were full of comic books and was there 'since infancy'. This was strange to me because I thought parents were meant to push their children to succeed. How could children achieve good academic results if their parents kept on indulge them in comics? Also, if the test was not that important, why were they so upset? My curiosity was evoked by this sense of confusion. It made me want to read more and to discover the true nature of this test. As I read on, I found out Dickie was a really smart child. He was a curious boy with inquiring mind. 'Why did it have to rain today?…Why dad?… What makers it green?…How far away is the sun?' Dickie was always asking questions however his dad was not seemed to be wanting to answer them. This made me even more confused because in my world, parents always encourage their children to ask questions but it was completely opposite in this short story. It seemed to me that whenever they were talking about the test, there was 'moisture in his mother's eyes.'
