playing with nature

We assume that our way of talking and gesturing is "natural" and that those who do things differently are somehow playing with nature.

In the above sentence, I don't quite understand the part "playing with nature." Is it a kind of idiom? I find that it is very different from, for example, a situation where children are playing with plants and animals. What is your take?
