'Playing' is used of games, Vincent:

He is playing tennis/chess/fooball/mah jongg in the park.
vs
He is skateboarding/swimming/exercising/jogging in the park. (These are used as verbs and are not games.)
vs
He is doing tai chi / practicing judo / doing gymnastics in the park. (These are not used as verbs and are not games.)
