Play(chess)

Hi.In:

You'll find typical plays for similar gambits in Chapter Six. "Annotated games.”

May I freely replace "plays" with "moves"? Or does "plays" have other connotations, too?

Thanks in advance!

soheil1 May I freely replace "plays" with "moves"? Yes. Those certainly sound synonymous to me, given the context of chess.

But the Merriem Webster's collegiate dictionary gives the definition:

f : the moving of a piece in a board game (as chess)
for play.
I think a move can be involunatry while moving is voluntary. What is your opinion?

The definition could just as easily have been: a move of a piece in a board game (as chess)

Don't be distracted by insignificant differences in the phrasing of the definition.

I also wonder if it means moves of one side plus the opponent's answer.

Now that could be, but I don't know chess and you do, so you'll have to be the judge of that.

What do I do?Weigh the different meanings of ''play'?I still don't know what play means exactly!
I think a 'move' in an instance of transferring a piece to another square-not necessarily intentional.
But 'moving' include an aim behind each move and signals the presence of a mover. Of course the mover can be under the influence.

Maybe you can judge better, told a fact:
