Play with vs hang out with

I think when I meet my friend I usually say I hang out with my friend last night.

And it seems to me we have a fun time out of home, such as park but also can be inside buildings such as cafes or restaurant. Hanging out means spend time always outside buildings?

Also, when I say play with, I usually play with some kind of toy or tools that make me enjoyable. ex) I played with Play Station. But do you also say I played with my nephew.(person) or should I say I hung out with my nephew?

But when I say hung out with my nephew means I spent time with him outside my home. some times I want to express I had a funtime with my nephew in my house.

So please tell me the correct usage between play with and hang out with Thank you

Hi, The main difference is that in modern English (at least in North America) only small children say ' I played with my friend '. Older children and adults will say it some other way, eg ' I hung out with my friend '. You can hang out anywhere, inside or out.

eg Yesterday, I played tennis / chess with Tom. We say 'play' with games and various sports

How about play with (things such as toy) I played with a toy car. Don't you use play with some material?

Hi,

Yes, that's true.

But usually only a child would play with a toy car. Or an adult who is playing with a child.

Figuratively, we say eg Tom played with a pencil while his boss was talking to him.
