My question is what is the difference between play and play with?

1. The girl likes to play with her doll.
2. The girl likes to play her doll.
3. He likes to play badminton.
4. He likes to play with badminton.

3. He likes to play badminton. Badminton is the name of a game. We play games. We play games with other people.
Doll is not the name of a game, so #2 is wrong.
