Play theatre

Hi.

Please, a friend of mine is a member of an amateur drama group. When asked what he did at the weekend he often says "We played theatre on Saturday/Sunday." That is what we say in Czech. But it doesn't sound right in English I think. I suggested saying "We performed on Saturday/Sunday." Although, I am not quite happy with that either as I think that can imply any kind of performance - theatre, concert .....

Any tips on how to say this simply, with no cumbersome sentences, so it is clear it was a theatrical performance? Does the phrase "play theatre" exist in English at all? Thank you.
