Play the high moral ground?

Why are they playing/claiming the high moral ground when they committed so many crimes?

I've heard playing the high moral ground, even though it sounds completely wrong. Is it idiomatic to use play instead of claim?

Playing the high moral ground sounds very unidiomatic. I would use claiming the moral high ground (note word order).
