play out/turn out

Hello,
Do you think that turn out can be used instead of play out in this sentence: "They were arguing violently and nobody knew how the situation play out"? I personally wouldn't use turn out in this sentence.

The bad thing is that "play out" sound better to me and I don't know why. Things couldn't get worse.
