Play or work in someone's favour?

Hello everyone,

I think it is fine to say that something "works in someone's favour"

but what about the verb 'play'?

Can you say:

"X.X’s management of the situation in Berlin played in his favour in the nomination." (context: nomination to a higher post in a political party)

Or should I substitute the verb with 'work'? Or some other verb?

Many thanks, looking forward to your opinions!

I would not change it. You can substitute 'work' if you really want to, but there is no reason to do so.
