Play it by ear

Hi

'

Cambridge dictionary introduces play it by ear as the 'word' of the day. Does it sound a bit odd to your ears? I think it can be called an idiom or expression but not a word. What is your take?

A feature like "Word of the Day" is meant for entertainment so I don't think they expect to be held accountable when they don't take every word in the title literally.
