Play for/on a team

Which team is he playing on/for?

Is there any difference if 'on' or 'for' is used? I thinking, there's a subtle difference in meaning but I'm not sure what it is.

Thanks

I don't see any difference in meaning, though I'd say that playing for is the more common way to express the idea.
