Plate, figure and table headers

In my current engineering reports I always insert my plate, figure and table headers below my inserted entity. I recall being told at university that different rules apply to plates, figures and tables and that one (or more) should have the header at the top of the inserted entity. Please could someone clarify and cite or reference their sources.

Hello DA, and welcome to English Forums. The style manual I have at hand does not indicate any such specific placements of captions or legends. It sounds an odd rule, because such illustrations, graphs, etc may be of any size and shape, and may appear in any part of the page.
