Plant the seed

Hi,

This is part of a video on "school bullying".

And again, many times if you just listen, and sort of put your ear to the ground, and open those lines of conversation, they may say, you might say, “Seem a little worried about school. What's on your mind?" And they may tell you, "Yeah, I'm worried about my teacher. I'm worried about my grades. But I'm also worried about—this one's in my class, or that one's in my class." And that's where you sort of, with a gentle hand, start that conversation. What you don't want to do is to plant the seed. You don't want to walk up to them and say, "Are you scared about the new school year?" Obviously you don't want to build up that anxiety, but you just want to keep those lines of communication open.

Q1) What does it mean to plant the seed?

Q2) What does the phrase "a gentle hand" mean?

I'd appreciate your help.
