Grammar

plains grass patterns

a. Summer comes to Uji, and in the fields are patterns of grass set out to dry.

b. Summer comes to Uji, and textiles with plains grass patterns are set out to dry./

Both the sentences were written by native speakers of English. As a non-native speaker and learner, I cannot accept it (plains grass patterns) easily. Is this phrase grammatical and semantically correct?

Top answer

Textiles with plains grass patterns is possible. It could mean the patterns represent grasses of the plains, or it could mean that the patterns represent grasses, and such patterns are typical of the plains (presumably the reader would know which plains are being referred to here). Sentence a) would suggest the grass is being dried to make hay.
