Plagiarize

as we know, basically, to plagiarize means "to copy".

I found this sentence in a dictionary: He has plagiarized most of the book from earlier studies of the period. the tanslation of this sentence into my language given in this dictionary means however "Most of the book was written by him by plagiarizing earlier studies of the period". thus i feel "plagiarize" in the example sentence cannot be understood as "to copy", but "to write sth. by copying". this is kind of perplexing to me. could someone clarify my confusions? tks a lot.

Dear Clive,

from what you said, i understand that my dictionary misuses the word in the example "He has plagiarized most of the book from earlier studies of the period". Is my understanding right? if yes, i will feel very sorry for that because i always take this dictionary as one of the most authentic dictionaries.
