I am trying to explain ' plagiarism and I am not sure if the following sentences sould natural.

If you copy word for word from the original source , but if you don't give credit to the author of the text, you are commiting plagiarism.

Use "and" instead of "but." Both conditions are necessary.

However, if you don't repeat the "if you," you can use either "and" or "but."
