I'm a bit confused about the following examples and whether or not new lines for speech are required.
In the first, I refer to a text message, so I am guessing that it does not require a new line as it was not spoken, but after it I quote something which was, but as part of the main narrative, so I am guessing that I am right to not use any new lines here too.
I caught sight of the reply on her phone: “Stay strong babe!” We were trapped by the snow, and unable to even run from them. The situation took another turn for the worst when they decided to “get some tunes on”.
Whereas in the next example, I have taken a new line for something which was spoken, but I am at a total loss about whether my recollection of words that I said should have a new line...
I was in Disneyland, and like any other eight-year-old, excited; I exclaimed:
“That ride is pure massive!”
Looking back, I was mortified. It was 2002, and after spending three months living in California, I had acquired a strange mix of American and Glaswegian slang, combining words such as “aye” and “trash” in the same sentence:
“Aye, I’ll take the trash out.”
Thanks in advance!
