Placement of 'confidently'?

Which is the most natural?

Charles confidently stepped up on the podium.

Charles stepped confidently up on the podium.

Charles stepped up on the podium confidently.

Confidently Charles stepped up on the podium.

Top answer

Firstly, all of them are relatively natural. The final one needs a comma after the word 'confidently', and I would probably use 'onto' rather than 'on' alone. If you were to ask me which I would go for, I'd probably choose the second version.

My opinion:

Charles stepped up on the podium confidently.

(Adverbs of manner usually go at the end of the clause. I don't see any reason to break tradition for this particular sentence.)
