Placement of an adverb

Hi, would you say that we normally place an adverb before a verb if there is one main verb and normally place after an auxiliary verb if there is one main and one auxiliary verb (Is 'verb' OK or has to be 'verbs' in plural??). As the example sentences seem to indicate, we seem to be able to place an adverb at the end too.

He usually dance well but I don't know what happpened today.

He can usually dance well but I don't know what happened today.
