In which sentence is the placement of the adverb correct? Is it a matter of taste?

He drove the car carefully.

He carefully drove the car.

Also correct, but less common, is

Carefully, he drove the car.

To some extent, it's a matter of intended emphasis. It's also a matter of style.

The most usual position for an adverb that tells "How?" / "In what manner?" is at the end.
That leaves room earlier in the sentence for an adverb that tells "How often?".

He usually drove the car carefully.
Does she always sing beautifully?
They have occasionally walked lazily along the beach.


Reversing the two does not sound at all idiomatic:
