Placement

Hi,
I'd be so grateful if anyone clarify the following italicized part:
"Graphic design is a rapidly growing course with a very practical approach. After the first two years of coursework taught in the university, students do a year's placement working with a company before returning to the university for the final year."

Is it a period in which a student must work in a company or organisation relevant to the field of study for free to gain some experiences?

regards,

Iman
