a) "He was placed 3rh in the race."
b) "He placed 3rh in the race."
Note: By this, I mean he was the 3rd person to cut the finishing line.
You need the passive voice in this one - he did not do the placing, he WAS PLACED by the officials who judged the race. If you use 'place' as an active verb, it needs an object to go with it. g.
