Place names in the Bible?

Hi,
Please tell me why there are articles placed for what looks like place names like "the Arabah" and "the whole Bithron"?

Samuel 2:29 (New International Version):

All that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, continued through the whole Bithron and came to Mahanaim.
