place a bid

Can I say "Please place a bid" or only "Please make a bid" ?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm asking because in my dictionaries is only make a bid, but on the Internet you can find also "place a bid"

It might be a difference between the meanings of bid.

We make a bid for freedom but we place a bid in an auction.

Thank you very much for your your explanation. It's odd that in dictionaries is only "make a bid for sth" [at auction].
and
make a bid for power/support
but
