Pits technology against the nightmarish human suffering it causes

Does the following sentence says that "brutal contents of Leon Golub's paintings on Vietnam war depict simultaneously technology and the nightmarish suffering that it has caused for human"? Golub's painting mostly show soldiers with guns killing or torturing others. Maybe, by "technology" the writer means "guns"?

Context:

The brutal imagery of American Leon Golub’s late 1960s’ paintings on the Vietnam War pits technology against the nightmarish human suffering it causes (Art and War by Laura Brandon).
