Some say pitch in money is ok but chip in money isn't.
But according to the Longman dictionary,
Chip in: if each person in a group https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/chip in, they each give a small amount of money so that they can buy something together
Ex) We all chipped in to buy Amy a graduation present.
Pitch in: to join others and pay part of the money towards something
Ex) They all pitched in and the money was collected within a few days.
So are they interchangeable and both common in terms of financial contribution?
Thanks~~
For me, "chip in" specifically means to contribute money, while "pitch in" more generally means to help out or contribute, including, but not limited to, contributing money.

In American English "chip in" is typically used for money and "pitch in" for work:
We all chipped in to buy him a going away present.
We all pitched in and helped him move into his new apartment.
